MHF4U and MCV4U: Grade 12 Math for University

MHF4U Advanced Functions is the prerequisite for MCV4U Calculus and Vectors, so the two run in sequence rather than side by side. Which ones you need is a question for the institution you are applying to.

By Grade 12 the maths conversation stops being about which course is interesting and starts being about which course is required. That shift brings a lot of pressure and a lot of confident, wrong advice with it.

What follows is what we can say accurately: what these courses are, how they connect to each other, and what it realistically takes to fit them into the time left. What we will not do is tell you what any university or college wants, because that is not ours to say.

The three Grade 12 U-level maths courses

Our catalogue lists five Grade 12 maths courses. Three of them are the ones students searching a code are usually after:

The other two are MAP4C, Foundations for College Mathematics, which takes MBF3C or MCF3M, and MCT4C, Mathematics for College Technology, which takes MCR3U or MCF3M. MCT4C is worth knowing about even if you are not taking it, because it is the second route into MHF4U.

In content terms, MHF4U extends what MCR3U started: polynomial and rational functions, logarithms, trigonometry in radians with identities, and a first serious look at rates of change. MCV4U picks up that last thread and runs with it into derivatives, curve sketching and optimisation, then changes subject almost entirely for a unit on vectors and geometry in three dimensions. MDM4U is a different animal again, built around counting, probability, statistics with one and two variables, and a substantial culminating investigation.

Why MHF4U usually comes before MCV4U

MCV4U lists MHF4U as its prerequisite, so the order is not a preference. It is also not bureaucratic.

MCV4U spends its opening weeks differentiating polynomial, rational, trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions. If you have not done MHF4U, you are being asked to learn what a logarithm is and how to differentiate one in the same lesson. Students who attempt that survive the first unit on procedure and come apart at the first problem that requires them to know why. The same is true of radians: MCV4U assumes them as ordinary working notation, and MHF4U is where they stop being strange.

There is a practical corollary. A weak MHF4U mark is the clearest early warning of trouble in MCV4U. If Advanced Functions finished at a mark that made you uncomfortable, that is worth treating as information about readiness, not just as a number on a transcript.

Taking Advanced Functions and Calculus in the same year

Plenty of students need both credits in one Grade 12 year. That year is also where a lot of maths marks go to die, and the reason is usually structural rather than academic.

In a two-semester school year, the two courses often land in a way that puts them close together or in parallel, which means MCV4U is drawing on MHF4U material the student has not finished learning. Running them in sequence solves most of that. We run our six terms a year, so a student can genuinely complete one before beginning the other rather than stacking them and hoping.

Be realistic about load as well. MCV4U is not a course to carry alongside a full slate of other credits if the mark is the point of taking it. There is a limit on how many credits a student may take in one term, set out in maximum credits per term on our admissions page, and it is there for exactly this reason. Where MDM4U fits

MDM4U is reachable from more places than the other two. Its prerequisite is MCR3U or MCF3M, which means a student who took Functions and Applications in Grade 11 rather than Functions and Relations is not shut out of it.

Students sometimes pick it up as a lighter third maths credit and get a surprise. The statistics and probability are approachable, but the culminating investigation is a real piece of independent work with a real time cost, and it does not reward being left until the end. Taken seriously it is a genuinely useful course for anyone who will meet data in whatever they do next.

What MDM4U is worth to a specific application is, again, a question for the institution. It is not interchangeable with MCV4U by default, and it is not automatically a lesser choice either. Both of those are assumptions people make, and both are guesses.

Upgrading a Grade 12 maths mark

Repeating MHF4U or MCV4U for a better mark can be a sound plan, but the honest version of the advice is narrower than the popular version.

Upgrading is worth the term when the mark reflects a gap you can name: a unit that never landed, a term disrupted by illness or a move, prerequisite material that was shaky before the course began. In those cases the second attempt goes differently because something concrete is different. Upgrading a mark that fairly represents where a student is, with nothing changed about how they are taught or supported, tends to produce a similar mark and a lost term.

Small classes matter here more than anywhere else in the sequence, because the fix is almost always diagnostic. Finding out in week two which three ideas are missing is the whole value of doing it again.

Check the programme requirements yourself

This is the part where most articles about Grade 12 maths quietly do you harm.

Which courses a programme requires, which it recommends, and which it will accept in place of another, differs by institution, differs between programmes at the same institution, and changes from one year of entry to the next. Advice that was accurate for someone’s older sibling is a poor basis for a decision that costs a term and a term’s tuition.

So do it properly, once:

  • Find the admissions page for the exact programme, at the exact institution, for your year of entry. Not a forum, not a summary article, not a school’s marketing page.
  • Note the date you checked, and check again before you submit.
  • Phone or email that admissions office about anything the page does not settle: how a repeated course is treated, whether a course taken elsewhere counts the same, what happens if a required credit finishes after the application goes in.
  • Get the answer in writing where you can.

We can tell you what our courses are and what our prerequisites are, precisely. We will not tell you what someone else’s admissions committee wants, and you should be wary of any school that offers to.

Timing against application deadlines

Once you know what the institution needs and by when, the scheduling question becomes answerable. Two things help.

First, more start dates. Six terms in an academic year means a student who decides in October is not usually waiting for February to begin. Second, the summer. Our July and August sessions exist partly for this: a credit finished over the summer is a credit that is not competing with a full Grade 12 timetable.

One caution worth building into the plan. A finished course still has to be assessed and reported, and application processes have their own timing for when a final mark can be considered. Ask the institution how and by when it needs to see a mark before you commit to a session, and leave yourself more room than the calendar strictly requires.
