Of all the boxes ticked on a course selection form, the Grade 10 maths box is the one most likely to be regretted in Grade 11. Not because either course is wrong, but because the two names sound like near-equivalents, and the difference between them does not show up until two years later, when a Grade 12 course quietly refuses a student.
So let us be concrete about it. Here are the two courses, the exact prerequisites the courses above them list, and what that means for a student sitting in front of the form right now.
The two Grade 10 maths courses
There are two Grade 10 mathematics credits, and they share a starting point:

Both take MTH1W, the Grade 9 mathematics course, as their prerequisite. Nothing in Grade 9 pushes a student towards one or the other; the Grade 10 door is open both ways for anyone holding that credit. You can compare MPM2D and MFM2P in the course list alongside everything they lead into.
The difference is in what happens next, and that is where most families are given a vague answer when they need an exact one.
Where each one leads in Grade 11
This is the part worth reading twice. Here are the three Grade 11 courses and the prerequisite each one lists:

Read the first row carefully. MCR3U lists MPM2D specifically. Not “MPM2D or MFM2P”. A student who completes MFM2P has MCF3M and MBF3C available to them, and does not have MCR3U available to them.
That single row is the whole reason this decision matters. Two of the three Grade 11 courses stay open either way, which is why the Grade 10 choice can feel low-stakes at the time. It is the third one that carries the weight.
Why that matters for Grade 12
MCR3U matters because of what sits on top of it. Follow the codes:

So the direct chain runs like this: MPM2D → MCR3U → MHF4U → MCV4U. Each link is a real prerequisite listed on the course above it. Take MPM2D out at the bottom and MCR3U is not available; without MCR3U, the shortest route into MHF4U is gone; and MCV4U sits behind MHF4U with no alternative route listed at all.
That is the whole mechanism. It is four courses in a line, and the first one is chosen in Grade 10 by a fifteen-year-old who has been told only that one is “harder”.
Notice also what stays reachable from MFM2P: MCF3M leads to MDM4U, MCT4C and MAP4C. A student on that route has real Grade 12 mathematics ahead of them, and calling MFM2P a dead end would be simply untrue.
There is even a longer way round to MHF4U. MHF4U lists MCR3U or MCT4C, and MCT4C lists MCR3U or MCF3M. So MFM2P → MCF3M → MCT4C → MHF4U is a route that exists on paper. It is three courses to arrive where MPM2D → MCR3U gets you in two, and each of those courses has to actually be timetabled and passed, so treat it as a genuine option rather than a plan you can count on casually.
What none of this tells you is what any particular university or college programme asks for at admission. That varies by institution, by programme and by year, and it is not something to take from a blog post. Get the requirement in writing from the admissions office of the specific school, then work backwards through the table above.
Choosing honestly rather than ambitiously
Two failure modes, and they cost different things.
Choosing MPM2D without support that the student needs. A student who found MTH1W genuinely hard, who was getting through on memorised procedures rather than understanding, and who is placed into MPM2D with nothing changed will often have a difficult year and a mark that closes doors just as effectively as the other course would have. Ambition on the form is not the same as readiness in the room.
Choosing MFM2P for a student who could have managed MPM2D with help. This is the quieter and more common mistake. It feels like relief in Grade 10 and shows up as a closed door in Grade 11, by which point reopening it costs a course.
The choice is not between a clever student and a less clever one. Both courses have serious mathematics in them. The honest question is narrower: does this student understand the Grade 9 material, or did they survive it? If they understand it, MPM2D is reasonable. If they survived it, MPM2D is still reasonable but only with the Grade 9 gaps actually filled, which is what tutoring alongside a running course is for. What is not reasonable is putting a student into MPM2D unsupported and hoping.
If you already chose and it is not working
Six weeks in, some students know. The work is not landing, the marks are not moving, and the year has a long way to run.
Moving between routes is a conversation with your home school first, not with us. They hold the transcript, they know what the timetable can absorb, and any conditions attached to a change of course type are theirs to explain. Ask the guidance office directly what a switch would mean at this point in the term and what, if anything, has to be completed alongside it.
What we can do is the arithmetic on the other side: given this student’s transcript and where they hope to end up, which chain still works, and what does each option cost in courses and time. That is a specific conversation about specific codes, and it is worth having before a decision is made rather than after.
Taking the other course to reopen the door
Here is the part that gets missed, and it is the most useful sentence in this article: a closed door can be reopened by completing MPM2D later.
MPM2D lists MTH1W as its prerequisite, and nothing else. A student who took MFM2P still holds MTH1W, so MPM2D remains available to them. Complete it, and MCR3U becomes available, and with MCR3U the chain into MHF4U and MCV4U is back on the table. It costs a course and it costs time, but it is a detour, not a wall.

Get the chain checked before you commit
Prerequisite chains are checkable. Yours is a specific list of codes, and someone should read it against your actual transcript before the form is submitted, not afterwards.
